A root canal is a type of treatment that, simply put, aims to sterilize and seal the inner most part of a tooth. Generally, a root canal is necessary when the inside of the tooth has become infected and compromised by bacteria.
IS GETTING A ROOT CANAL PAINFUL?
A local anesthetic is given before root canal treatment is initiated. Once numb, patients typically feel little to no discomfort. Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) can be given to anxious patients if desired.
HOW LONG DOES A ROOT CANAL TAKE?
A root canal appointment length depends greatly on the tooth’s unique anatomy and complexity. A root canal can typically take anywhere from one to three appointments. Each appointment may last anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours.
WHAT ARE SOME SIGNS I MAY NEED A ROOT CANAL?
Common signs of needing a root canal are: pain to chewing and/or pressure, severe and/or lengthy painful response to hot and cold temperatures, swelling and blistering of the gums, and darkening of a tooth.
